The class was\u00a0packed with\u00a0people who are transitioning into leadership roles&#8211;moving from individual contributors to managers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.i-leadonline.com\/images\/MagnifyingGlassGuy.jpg?resize=230%2C346\" alt=\"Project managers study their bosses\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"230\" height=\"346\" \/>At one point the discussion moved towards dealing with difficult people<\/strong>. In particular, a participant talked about struggling with a challenging boss. Cynthia, a new leader in the organization&#8217;s HR department, shared a lesson she learned from her mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;Instead of trying to control him, you need to start studying him.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trying to control difficult people might just be fruitless<\/strong>. But studying them&#8230;. learning what makes them tick&#8230;. what their preferences are&#8230;. what they like and dislike&#8230;. how others around you are able to influence them&#8230;. That is great advice, mom!<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a title=\"project management podcast\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleandprojectspodcast.com\/index.php\/podcast-episodes\/35-episodes\/127-delivering-projects-through-people-with-author-dave-po-chedley-pmp.html\" target=\"_blank\">project management podcast interview<\/a>\u00a0with author Dave Po-Chedley, he uses the phrase, &#8220;learn your sponsor&#8217;s buying habits.&#8221; Learn how they make decisions. Study them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whether it&#8217;s a challenging boss, co-worker, customer, or teenager :), follow mom&#8217;s advice: Stop trying to control them!
